NEW ORLEANS SUITE: A SERIES OF MONOPRINTS COMBINING SCREENPRINT AND COLLAGE
This series of monoprints results from applying screen-printing techniques atop Xeroxed images and using various newspaper and magazine clippings for collage variations. The black and white images of the United States and HELP were duplicated directly on paper by a copy machine in order to form a unifying matrix. Stenciled shapes of stars, stripes, musical notes, color blocks, and figures were screen-printed over the black and white matrix of the Xeroxed forms. Similar works by artist Romare Bearden inspired the collage elements. Furthermore, the recent tragedy of Hurricane Katrina became the focal point since the losses were both nationally widespread and strongly felt in the African-American community.
